When an accident occurs, usually police can readily determine a cause of the crash by speaking to the drivers of the vehicles and witnesses. They may also take into account the position of the vehicles and tire marks to make determinations. There are cases, however, where even the police are left with questions. This can occur when the drivers are left unable to speak for themselves and there are few witnesses. In cases like these, they have accident recreation teams to help them determine what happened. They may also call upon the public to come forward if they witnessed the crash.
