Mechanical failures on vehicles happen all the time, but usually, they just cause a driver to be a little late for wherever they’re going. They may need to get a tow and have a few repairs done, but normally, no harm is done. However, a mechanical failure can lead to an accident happening, such as when brakes fail. In what is considered to be a “freak” accident, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution reported on a tire that flew off of a vehicle, then struck and killed a motorist.
The incident occurred Thursday morning, October 19th, at the height of the commute. Just before 8 a.m., a pickup truck traveling north on Georgia 400 near Pitts road lost a wheel and a tire. The tire flew off of the vehicle, went over the median wall, and struck a vehicle going southbound.
The driver of the southbound vehicle, identified as 49-year-old Julieanna Shedrawy of Alpharetta, died at the scene. She was the only person in the car.
The driver of the pickup truck, Jorge Herrera, remained on the scene hours after the accident. He was not said to be drunk or speeding. He expressed remorse about the accident.
At times, the accident closed down both sides of the highway before traffic reopened at about 11 a.m.
No charges are expected to be filed in the incident. Investigators determined that the tire came off of the truck due to a mechanical failure.
