Many intersections within cities become notorious for the number of accidents that occur within their crossing. Several times, studies have been done to determine which are the most dangerous. The results may be surprising.
Channel 2 Action News Atlanta’s reporter Dave Huddleston began investigating metro Atlanta intersections with the most accidents. Initially, he expected the most accidents to have occurred within the city of Atlanta.
However, only one intersection patrolled by Atlanta Police made the list. The intersection of Monroe Drive and Piedmont Avenue only just made the top ten.
In the course of his research, Huddleston looked at accidents that occurred during the month of July and their locations. Focusing on surface streets, the team found a total of 615 intersections that averaged 2 accidents or more per week.
Only one other intersection inside the perimeter made the list and it came in at number 9. It is an intersection located in Dekalb County: Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Road.
The top five crash-prone intersections were Memorial Drive and N Road with 22 accidents and the intersection of East Park Place & Stone Mountain Highway with 20 accidents, both located within Stone Mountain. These two intersections were the number one and two spots respectively. Coming in at number three was Covington Highway and Lithonia Road, having had 19 accidents. Cobb Place Boulevard and Ernest Barrett Parkway was number four with 18. Finishing the top five was Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard with 17 accidents.
