The Libby Mine in Montana used to process a mineral called vermiculite, which is used for insulation and gardening among other purposes. But the mineral veins are naturally mixed with asbestos and caused great damage to the miners and the surrounding area. The State of Montana has finally reached a settlement with the miners for not warning them of the dangers.
The mine has been closed since 1999, but people continue to sicken. The class action suit awarded the hundreds of plaintiffs $25 million to settle claims that the state failed to protect the town.
The award was given by the Montana Supreme Court, so there are no more chances for appeals.
The area has been under a massive cleanup program by the EPA. $600 million has been spent so far on cleanup efforts to make the area safe again. It is estimated that 400 people have died and another 3,000 sickened from asbestos exposure thanks to the mine.
