Distracted driving and speeding are two major causes of accidents. Combined, they can lead to serious accidents. Some police departments are cracking down on both speeding and distracted driving in order to reduce the number of accidents.
In Milledgeville, Georgia, police are cracking down on speeding drivers and distracted drivers.
The push comes as a part of the annual H.E.A.T. Program that is aimed at reducing the number of traffic accidents. The number of accidents is down, but there’s still need for enforcement.
Major John Davis said, “We want people to know the laws, to know what they’re there for — that they’re there to maintain order and safety on the roadways which is a big part in reducing accidents.”
Major Davis and other drivers continue the annual H.E.A.T program to inform drivers of safety laws from wearing seat belts to speeding. About 100 tickets have been handed out over the month for various reasons.
Davis stated that North Columbia Street is a problem area. He stated that there were many accidents in that area. Davis went on to say that when the program first began, they handed out around 250 tickets. The numbers have dropped, but they are leveling off.
While many people think that distracted driving has only to do with texting, it can be anything. Changing the radio station and reaching down to pick up a cup from a cup holder can cause distracted driving accidents.
