11 Alive reported that a parking garage collapse in midtown Atlanta led to serious injuries for workers caught in the accidents.
The incident occurred near Emory University Midtown Hospital, at the intersection of West Peachtree Street and Linden Avenue. On Friday afternoon, according to Atlanta Fire Department, a part of a parking structure was under construction collapsed, with one person trapped under the wreckage.
Fire Department personnel were unable to use inflatable ‘pillows’ to lift the debris off the trapped worker, so they had to use rigging, special rescue saws, and an on-site crane to pull debris loose. The rescue was noted as especially tense due to the crane operator not being able to see the area where they were operating and having to rely on spoken direction from a fire captain. After a daring 11-minute operation, the trapped worker was pulled out with a serious leg injury and taken to a local hospital. At least four other workers were injured in the incident.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
