If you could pick a spot between the rush hours where a wreck would cause the most delays, one spot you might choose would be the intersection of 400 and I-285. That’s exactly where a crash between two semi-trailers happened recently, snarling up traffic for hours.
A Publix semi and a fuel tanker collided at the bridge crossing over 400. Both fell off the bridge. The Publix truck landed upside down in the middle of 400. The fuel tanker went off the bridge and fell down on its side in the 400 median. Luckily for the drivers of both vehicles, both were uninjured. It was also fortunate that the tanker truck did not leak any of its fuel.
However, the crash blocked one of the major interchanges. Northbound 400 was backed up to Lennox Road. Southbound 400 was backed up to Abernathy. Eastbound traffic on I-285 was blocked off by officials while they inspected the bridge to make sure it was structurally sound after the accident. That traffic was rerouted to southbound 400. Northbound 400 drivers were rerouted to I-285 East after the bridge.
It took traffic crews about 4.5 hours to finish clearing the roads and inspecting the bridge.
