When nursing homes are investigated and found to be “deficient,” they are generally given time to correct the issues and re-inspected.One nursing home is facing fines that are increasing daily for not addressing previous deficiencies. The Woodbriar Health Center nursing home, located in Wilmington, Massachusetts, has currently racked up almost $300,000 in fines that will continue to increase daily. The fines will increase until the facility addresses the safety deficiencies that state found after the deaths of two patients.
The Department of Public Health found a number of issues to the nursing homes’ response to a patient that had fallen from a mechanical lift on Christmas Day.
Mary Meuse, 83, suffered from fractured legs while three shifts of nurses passed her by. She was eventually taken to the hospital. Meuse was also on blood thinners. She died two days after being admitted to the hospital.
After a follow-up visit in March, the state froze admissions to the nursing home. Officials were investigating the death of another patient. This resident had fallen from his bed on February 8th. He was found dead in his bed the following day at 5:30 am.
At that point, Woodbriar was placed in “immediate jeopardy” status. This status is the most serious deficiency level the state is able to issue.
A letter from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent to Woodbriar indicated they had only corrected two of the original citations from January. The same agency is also fined the nursing home $165,300 for deficiencies found in the initial visit and daily fines of $7,100 for new and uncorrected deficiencies.
If corrective action is not taken soon, the center could lose its Medicare and Medicaid funding.
Woodbriar said in a statement that is working closely with the DPH to correct all of the concerns.
