According to Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey in a recent announcement, Patriots Environmental and its affiliated companies will pay up to $129,000 to resolve allegations of illegal handling of asbestos-containing materials.
According to the lawsuit, it is alleged that the company had failed to follow proper procedures and safety precautions for removing asbestos-containing materials during the demolition process of a home located in Sturbridge.
“Improper handling of asbestos during construction and demolition work can cause serious health hazards,” Healey said. “In order to prevent the exposure of workers, the public, and the environment to dangerous asbestos fibers, such projects must be conducted in strict accordance with state regulations, and we will vigorously pursue those who fail to comply with those safety requirements.”
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Commissioner Martin Suuberg said in a statement regarding the handling of asbestos in this case; “Licensed asbestos contractors must follow the proper removal practices and storage requirements to protect workers and the public from being exposed to this known carcinogen. As this settlement reflects, MassDEP and the attorney general’s office work together to take strong enforcement against companies that fail to comply with the asbestos regulations and put citizens of the Commonwealth at risk of exposure.”
It is a well-known fact that materials containing asbestos must be handled carefully during construction and other similar work projects. The fine dust that these products produce poses a health risk not only to workers but to their families as well. Airborne asbestos fibers can cause serious health issues when they are inhaled and can damage lungs, cause mesothelioma and some related cancers.
