People who drive under the influence of drugs become unpredictable. They’re a hazard to themselves and a hazard to the public. Crashes due to drugs are often deadly and come with high punishments. One man who was convicted of driving under the influence of heroin and hit three boys has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The man was in tears apologizing to the families involved for what he did. Officers say that he was under the influence of heroin laced with fentanyl when he crashed into the three boys. He crossed the centerline of the road and drove up onto the sidewalk. One of the boys died, another received a traumatic brain injury, and the third was injured with a broken pelvis and other injuries. The incident happened last year.
The man faced an upper limit of 49 years in prison for the litany of charges. Some family members were displeased that he only received 30 of those years. Assuming he serves the full sentence, he will be out of prison just before his 60th birthday.
We hope that the families were able to get civil compensation for their losses as well, and we are glad that the responsible party will pay for his crimes by the state.
