News Channel 4 Jacksonville reported Monday on a tragic end to a confrontation in Monroe County, GA between an off-duty police officer and a man who rear-ended him and then ran into traffic.
The incident occurred Sunday night on Interstate 75 north of Macon, Georgia. A police officer from Glynn County, on the Georgia coast in the Brunswick area, was en route to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth for a training session in a marked police cruiser when he was rear-ended by a man in Monroe County. The impact was significant enough to disable both vehicles. The man reportedly attacked the officer physically and, after the officer defended himself, told him “you will have to kill me” before running into traffic, where he was struck by several vehicles. He was killed at the scene of the accident by the vehicle impacts.
The officer was taken to a hospital to treat minor injuries, and I-75 was closed for several hours to investigate the incident, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
