When it come to our elderly loved ones, we expect the facilities that care for them to be clean and free of abuse and neglect. Sadly, that is not always the case. When facilities are found to be deficient, lawsuits can be filed both by the state governments and the families of those in the facility’s care.
In Upper Allen Township, PA, a care home has had its share of complaints since last year. The West Shore nursing home is now facing reports of maggots in the feeding tubes of patients.

This facility and 20 other Golden LivingCenters in Pennsylvania have all come under fire by the Attorney General’s office. The office filed suit over the summer.
The inspection listing this violation occurred on October 22, 2015. Some very important issues were identified.
The inspection report stated that maggots were found in a patient’s feeding tube. A nurse reported “worm like bugs crawling all around PEG tube and surrounding tissue.”
Of the 31 deficiencies reported by inspectors on the October 22nd inspection, some were notable. Feeding tubes were not changed as often as required, improper pest control was in place, and patients were not being hydrated properly.
A statement from the Attorney General’s office indicated that they had received hundreds of complaints against Golden LivingCenter facilities since the lawsuit had been announced. They also indicated they were dedicated to following through on the lawsuit.
A statement from a Golden LivingCenter spokesperson indicated that they were dedicated to working with the Department of Health to resolving the issues and correcting any deficiencies found. They also indicated that they self-reported several of the issues that were raised. The woman whose feeding tube was found infested had wanted to enjoy a glass of iced tea on the report. The bugs were discovered upon her coming back inside. They cleared the feeding tube and reported the issue.
