Summer brings with it trips to the lakes and water parks of Georgia. One of the more popular lakes to visit is Lake Lanier. However, with visits to the lake comes the potential for boating accidents. These accidents can be fatal.
The bodies of four victims of an overturned boat were discovered on July 17th. Authorities were able to recover the bodies of 4 people, all from Kentucky.
Melissa Renee McMahan, 45 and Arthur Gene McMahan, 46, of Mount Washington, Kentucky, along with Tammy Reece, 44 and Anthony Reece, Jr., 44, both of Columbia, Kentucky, were all found after an extensive search.
All four were aboard a 38-40 foot cigarette type boat near Cocktail Cove when it overturned. Though a collision with another boat is not suspected, an investigation into what caused the boat to overturn is being conducted. The victims were in town for the Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker run event. The group posted on their Facebook about the accident:
“The Lanier Partners would like to send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of those involved in an accident on Lake Lanier today. The accident involved part of our poker run family and we are with heavy hearts tonight,” the post read in part.
Family of the victims released their own statement:
“At this time we want to thank the community, friends, and family for their ongoing love and support. Our parents meant the world to us, we never realized how much impact they had on people’s lives. They both were such amazing, loving and caring parents, grandparents, children siblings and friends to so many. They were one of a kind and will truly be missed. Thank you again for your continued prayers.”
