Johnson & Johnson has lost another mesh lawsuit, this time in Philadelphia. They’ve been ordered to pay $20 million over a defective vaginal mesh. Bloomberg.com has the details on the case.
The plaintiff received $2.5 million from the jury, then slapped the company with $17.5 million in punitive damages. This is at least the fifth case that the company has lost in jury trials about this particular product. Three similar cases are pending in Philadelphia over the next two months.
The company has been doing its best to settle with the tens of thousands of women who have come forward with symptoms of pain and infection from mesh implants before they get to trial. They have also managed to win a few jury trials. They plan to appeal this latest ruling.
However, legal experts are starting to wonder why the company hasn’t thought about doing a comprehensive settlement to handle all of the cases to avoid further legal fees.
Johnson & Johnson pulled their mesh products off the market over five years ago, but there were still many people who received them and developed pain and infection as a result of mesh breakdown or improper installation. These people deserve compensation.
