One of the hot, must-have toys this holiday season was the hoverboard. While not exactly what was envisioned in the Back to the Future sequel, these new ride-on toys proved very popular. However, along with that popularity have come reports of injuries.
A family in Roswell, Georgia, is warning others of the potential dangers of riding on a hoverboard. This comes after their son suffered an accident after riding on one.
A doctor from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Dr. Taha Shakir, recommends that if you are going to ride a hoverboard, you wear the appropriate safety gear.
Ryan Frommer, 10, wishes he had followed that advice. He said he was riding his hoverboard when he saw something ahead of him. He jerked backwards, but went back too far. He then went forward, and crumpled. His feet stayed on the board, so the board kept going. His finger got entangled in the hoverboard’s wheel. The motor mechanism broke the boy’s finger.
Frommer stated that the injury was more surprising than painful.
Dr. Shakir stated that he hasn’t seen a huge spike in hoverboard injuries. Those he has seen were similar to injuries sustained falling off of a bicycle.
Frommer said that he might get back on the board again. Someday.
