When you’ve been injured as a result of another’s actions or negligence, sometimes all you want is justice for those who have wronged you. Sometimes, that justice comes in the form of monetary restitution to cover your injuries, lost wages, and other incidentals that are lost due to the incident. Other times, justice comes in the form of criminal charges as a man in Atlanta proves.
Last year, Joseph Alan Lewis struck Gregory Germani, who was on his bike, and then sped away in his Dodge Nitro. As he sped away, Lewis drug Germani approximately 50 feet, resulting in Germani experiencing severe injuries. His injuries include a traumatic brain injury and neck and torso injuries, which now require him to have round-the-clock care.
Witnesses to the accident reported that Lewis and Germani exchanged words moments before the accident. It is believed that the verbal altercation was the reason that Lewis struck Germani. After fleeing the accident, Lewis fled to Los Angeles, but later turned himself in to authorities in Georgia.
Germani had ridden his bicycle to his job at Turner Broadcasting System daily for twenty years. In addition to this, Germani maintained a website called Atlanta Historical Time Machine. The website showed properties in Atlanta from the past and what they currently look like. The website has not been updated since the accident.
Lewis pled guilty to charges of serious injury by vehicle, hit and run, criminal damage to property, tampering with evidence, failure to report an accident, driving without a valid license, and expired or no license plate decal. The charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault were dropped.
