Ever since news of the Volkswagen scandal broke last year, many people have questioned the ads the company ran in order to bring people into dealerships to buy the vehicles. Volkswagen ran ads for years about how efficient, fun, and above all, their diesel engine automobiles were.
Last year, after announcing that they had lied about the performance of the company’s diesel technology, the company pulled its ads from their YouTube channel and stopped running them on television. Previously, the company had ran ads on the social media site and had a prominent spot in the coveted Super Bowl advertisements.
On Tuesday, March 29th, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen of America. The lawsuit alleges that the company’s “clean diesel” ad campaign was deceptive.
The complaint was not unexpected. In fact, it has been long awaited since the announcement made by the company in September regarding the performance of their technology. The FTC alleges that in a seven year period, Volkswagen used a deceptive advertisement campaign to sell more than 550,000 vehicles at an average price of $30,000. The FTC further alleges that part of the deceptive campaign was the promise that the vehicles were eco-friendly, met emissions standards, and maintained a high resale value.
The FTC contends that customers who purchased affected vehicles suffered billions of dollars in injury.
In the lawsuit, the agency is seeking a court order that would require the automotive company to compensate American customers who purchased or leased an affected vehicle between 2008 and 2015.
This is the second lawsuit filed by a government agency that the automaker has faced. The Justice Department sued Volkswagen in January over the emissions scandal.
Volkswagen is also facing a series of lawsuits from car owners and dealers who suffered monetary loss as a result of the scandal.
