No one can argue that seatbelts save lives. In 2017, seatbelt use saved approximately 14,955 lives. That same year, of 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes, 47% of those who died were not wearing seatbelts. Nationally, according to the NHTSA, seatbelt use sits at about 90.7% in 2019.
Those who buckle up in the front seat of a passenger car reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45%. Their risk of moderate to critical injury is reduced by 50%. In a light truck, those statistics are slightly higher, with the reduction of fatal injury at 60% and moderate to critical injury by 65%.
11 Alive reports that an accident on Interstate 20 in Rockdale County resulted in several children being ejected from the vehicle.
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of an accident on I-20 east near Sigman Road.
When deputies arrived, they found an overturned vehicle that had been carrying seven people. Six of the passengers were children under the age of eleven. Four of those children were ejected from the vehicle.
The children who were ejected and the other passengers were rushed to a local hospital for the treatment of their injuries.
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office did not release the names or the conditions of those involved in the accident.
The accident is still under investigation.
