It’s not over yet, but the Takata airbag recall has been one of the largest recalls in the automotive industry. The airbags, which were installed on millions of vehicles across several different manufacturers, can deploy with too much force, sending metal shrapnel flying through the vehicle. This shrapnel can cause serious injury, facial lacerations, and even death. While the auto manufacturers are sending out recall notices, utilizing social media, offering free rentals that owners can use while their car is being fixed. Still, according to Fox 5 Atlanta, there are still too many of the faulty airbags that are still on the road.
Despite the recall being four years old, one in six of the affected vehicles is still on the road with defective airbags.
There have been sixteen fatalities directly related to the airbags in the United States alone. There have been hundreds of injuries.
Companies like Honda and Toyota have taken to social media to try and warn owners about the recalls. They have even offered rewards to people who can get friends and family members with affected vehicles to bring their cars in to get the airbags fixed.
Now they’ve turned to Hollywood to try and get the message out. Www.safeairbags.com has gotten Hollywood legend Morgan Freeman to feature in a new public service announcement to get people to check their VINs against a database to ensure that their vehicle is not currently a part of a recall.
Mr. Freeman walks people through how to check to see if their vehicle is on the list.
