We expect our police to serve and protect the community, but often the actions of an officer can besmirch the entire profession. We have seen lots of stories lately about police misconduct involving firearms, but there is a story in Atlanta about an officer that was careless while using his vehicle.
Earlier this year, an officer struck and killed an older man that was crossing Metropolitan Avenue. The officer was placed on administrative leave while the police department investigated what happened. Now the family of the slain man is suing the Atlanta Police Department for wrongful death.
The attorneys in the case say that surveillance video taken from a nearby convenience store shows that the man was not in the middle of the road when he was struck. He was just stepping off the curb. They also state that the officer was travelling well above the posted speed limit of 35 MPH without lights or sirens on. The police have refused to comment on the case or meet with the family while the lawsuit is ongoing.
Officers do receive a lot of protections as part of their dangerous job, but that doesn’t make them immune from misconduct. We shall see how this case pans out in the courts.
