The Takata airbag recall is well-known now, but it seems like new cars keep getting added to the list all the time. A new round has been added to the recall list but from a surprising source. Expensive supercars have now been found to have the dangerous airbag inflators.
Not just older supercars either. Car models from this year and even next year have shipped with the bad inflators! Why? Turns out that it’s not easy to replace these inflators with something else. Because so few supercars are sold, the window to sell is small before something new comes along. This would be no problem if the part was reliable, but Takata inflators have already killed and injured many people.
The new affected models include the:
- 2012 Lexus LFA
- 2017 Audi R8
- 2016-2017 McLaren 570S
- 2016-2017 Ferrari’s (yes, all of them!)
- 2012-2016 Tesla Model S
- McLaren P1 hypercar
This could lead quite a few people with means wanting answers for why a faulty inflator went into their expensive purchase. They deserve those answers. For a full list of cars that have been affected by the Takata airbag recall, take a look at this page from the NHTSA that lists all makes, models, and years affected by the inflators.
