Birth control is a topic that many women have to consider at one point or another in their lives. While there are many methods of birth control, few are permanent other than a hysterectomy. One form of birth control, called Essure, and manufactured by Bayer, is said to be permanent. WAVY reports, however, that a number of women have had serious complications due to the device and are suing Bayer.
Thirty-one women from 15 states are involved in a federal lawsuit against the manufacturer. They say that the Essure birth control has caused them serious, painful health problems.
Some have reported the device malfunctioning, puncturing organs, and causing a myriad of other health problems.
One of those patients, a woman named Saudia Jones of Newport News, says that Essure caused severe abdominal pain, back pain, and caused her to bleed heavily. She wants Bayer to pay.
Doctors are having trouble removing the device from patients who are experiencing issues. Jones may have to undergo a hysterectomy to get the device removed.
All of the women are requesting a jury trial. They want Bayer to cover their attorney’s fees and medical bills. In addition, they want Bayer to pay for any future medical expenses they may accrue related to the device. They are also seeking a monetary award for damages because they say that Bayer fraudulently represented the safety of the device.
When it comes to the FDA, they have issued a ‘black box warning’ – their most serious warning label – for the Essure device.
