You often hear of it happening with an elderly driver or, at times, a driver who is incapacitated by drugs or alcohol. They go to their car, and thinking that they are pushing on the break, mistakenly press the gas, and drive into a building. It’s a common enough occurrence, but such mishaps can end in tragedy. The Gwinnett Daily Post reports on a car which was driven into a restaurant.
A 68-year-old woman was pulling into a parking space just outside M and J Homestyle Cooking at about 3 p.m. on Thursday. Police believe that the elderly woman may have been confused and pressed the gas pedal by mistake. She drove into the packed Snellville restaurant.
Police say that despite the restaurant being packed, only two people sustained injuries, one of them minor. Unfortunately, an unidentified 71-year-old man was killed in the collision.
Investigators are still attempting to piece together information from the crash, but they believe the woman confused the brake pedal with the accelerator. It has not yet been decided if she will face charges in the accident.
The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and checked for injuries. Her husband, who was in the car with her, was not injured.
Gwinnett County Fire Department officials inspected the building and determined that it was still structurally sound.
