Labor Day weekend is a busy time for the city of Atlanta. Not only is it the weekend of the Chik-fil-A collegiate football bowl game, it is also the weekend of Black Gay Pride. Labor Day weekend is also the weekend that Dragon Con, a large multi-genre pop culture convention is held downtown. The weekend almost always includes several parties that take place in the rooms of the many hotels hosting attendees and guests for the convention. With so many thousands of people gathered in the area, incidents are bound to happen. WSB TV reports on one newsworthy incident where a woman was hit in the head with a chair that fell from a 10th floor balcony.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning at the Marriot Marquis hotel. Police say that several bottles and a chair were thrown from a 10th floor balcony at around 1:30 a.m.
Kelly McDaniels, who was dressed as a female version of Loki from Marvel’s Thor comics, was walking around a first-floor area of the hotel. One of the chairs struck her in the head.
McDaniels reported hearing several pops and then felt blood running down her face. She was treated at an area hospital where she received two staples.
McDaniels credits the helmet she was wearing as a part of her cosplay with lessening the injury and possibly saving her life.
She is urging anyone with any information to come forward and notify police.
“I think they need to punished by the law for assault with a deadly weapon. I could have been really hurt,” she said.
McDaniels was one of two women hurt in the incident. The second woman was treated and released from a separate hospital.
