You may remember a few weeks ago the vicious dog attack that claimed the life of a child in Atlanta. Legislators are trying to take action to strengthen the animal control code in response to that incident.
According to the AJC, legislation has been referred legislation back to the public safety and legal administration committee after amendment. The legislation will amend part of the code of ordinances related to animals to add additional restrictions on dangerous dog breeds, though the details have not been released.
In the criminal proceedings surrounding the case, the dog owner had his charges reduced to misdemeanor manslaughter. Prosecutors were originally aiming to charge the owner with a felony.
As we learned from that case, a dog attack can be deadly. And when the attack is done to a child, it just adds to the tragedy. We hope that the families of the children that were attacked do receive compensation for their losses once the criminal case is wrapped up.
