The call for the Food and Drug Administration to ban the use of the medical device, Essure, made by Bayer, is being led by Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick after thousands of complaints have been received.
Essure is a form of permanent birth control that is an alternative to a tubal ligation that is implanted into the fallopian tubes. It is believed to be a more affordable form of permanent birth control; however it has been the source of widespread complaints of medical complications and even death.
Essure was approved by the FDA in 2002, however, according to Congressman Fitzpatrick; it is also responsible for more than 300 fetal deaths and countless other related medical issues.
Fitzpatrick further alleges that parent company, Bayer, has offered illegal financial incentives to doctors. “The manufacturer is providing free marketing and advertising services to OB/Gyn. They were encouraging them to use Essure on their patients, and they were making a lot of money,” Congressman Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick said that money that was being made was from insurance companies, taxpayers and the women who had the device implanted. Many of these women suffered pain and suffering and other medical complications.
One woman, Amanda Dikeman, claims that she went through years of pain and suffering before she had the device removed from her body. “My once very thick hair began falling out in clumps. I battled continuous urinary tract and kidney infections.”
Consumers and lawmakers alike are asking why the FDA has been slow in receiving and acting upon complaints regarding the Essure device.
No one should have to suffer further medical complications from a drug or medical device that was approved by the FDA. Holding companies responsible for the pain and suffering of patients is what we do at John Foy & Associates.
