When we place our loved ones into a care facility, we are expecting that the best care possible will be taken with them. The last thing we want for them is for them to be abused or neglected. Unfortunately, these things occur all over the country. Sometimes, they can be shocking.
A certified nursing assistant from Michigan City, Indiana is facing serious charges. The charges come after she took video of an 85-year-old nursing home resident while showering and posted it to social media.
Kara DeVaux, 24, of Michigan City is charged with voyeurism, and class-A sale, distribution, or exhibition of profane matter. Voyeurism is a class-6 felony.
Court documents allege that DeVaux filmed the woman, who was sitting in a shower chair, as nursing home employees sprayed her with water. The incident occurred at Aperion Care Arbors. After filming, DeVaux posted a 10-second video, which showed the fully exposed woman, on Snapchat. She gave friends permission to view the video.
Two co-workers who saw the video immediately notified the facility director, Tara Trevino.
DeVaux was immediately suspended from her position, pending the outcome of an investigation.
Court documents indicate that when asked by her boss, DeVaux stated that she had not intended to post the video to social media. She had only intended to take a picture to share with co-workers at a later time.
