In today’s world of social media, accidents can be captured and posted to sites like Facebook and Instagram with ease. This can help law enforcement determine what happened in some cases. In some cases, however, there is no need and the cause is apparent.
Last Thursday night, a car was precariously balanced among the suspension cables on the fourth floor ledge of a parking garage in Atlanta. The incident occurred in the 2500 block of Piedmont Road.
Police state that a witness saw Madison Merritt speeding through the parking garage to catch up to a vehicle in front of the woman. Instead of going upwards another level, however, Merritt accelerated forward, sending her car into a set of suspension cables. The suspension cables are designed to keep cars from falling to the ground below.
Merritt was still in the vehicle when police arrived on the scene. A police statement said Merritt seemed highly intoxicated, incoherent and unaware of where she was at the time.
An officer was able to pull Merritt to safety by entering the left passenger side of the car.
Police allege that Merritt’s speech was slurred and stammering and she was barely able to stand. She was taken to the hospital for observation and arrested for DUI.
The damage done to the parking structure was substantial, according to the report.
