Tractor-trailer drivers are among some of the best trained and safest drivers on the nation’s roadways. That doesn’t stop accidents from occurring and due to the size of tractor trailers, these accidents are usually serious and can involve severe injuries and fatalities. The Telegraph reports on a fatal accident where the cab of a tractor-trailer was pulled away from the trailer.
The accident shut down Interstate 16 west for hours Wednesday morning in Twiggs County. Macon-Bibb County firefighters were called in to assist on a multi-vehicle accident that happened just after 5:20 a.m.
The battalion fire chief at the scene, Tim Johnson, said that it looked like two tractor trailers and a Ford Explorer were involved in the crash.
The driver of the tractor-trailer whose cab pulled away was pronounced dead at the scene. He had to be cut from the vehicle. A second passenger in the sleeping compartment was not injured.
The driver of the second tractor-trailer, which came to a stop in the emergency lane, left the scene.
A third vehicle, identified as a Ford Explorer, was overturned. The female driver was not seriously injured according to the Twiggs County coroner.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is reconstructing and investigating the crash.
All westbound lanes were closed until early afternoon as the crash remained under investigation.
