The high school baseball community in Georgia was dealt a major blow earlier in the month.
Pollard lost his life due to blunt force trauma injuries as a result of the accident. Pollard was driving his Chevrolet when it was struck by the stolen Audi, which forced his vehicle into another truck. A witness ran to attempt to help Pollard, but was unable to extricate him from the vehicle. Pollard was declared deceased shortly thereafter.
David Smart, coach of rival team LaGrange, spoke about Pollard. “He was going to the hardware store to pick up chalk to line the field and didn’t come back. He worked at (coaching). He was important to us and he was important to his kids. He was doing everything in his power to turn that program into something really, really good.”
Others in the community remembered Pollard for his work ethic as well as his dedication to his student athletes. The school district released a statement that expressed sadness at the loss and offering support to all of those affected by his death.
Columbus police report that the driver of the Audi fled the scene on foot. The driver has yet to be identified.
