Recently, a man from Augusta, Georgia was killed in a racing stint. Due to the fatal street race they recently participated in, his friend is now is in jail.
Authorities say that the two men were racing in two separate cars, taking up both the east and westbound lanes of Birdwell Road near the 400 block. This was around 7 p.m. on February 23, 2014. The victim was driving a Chevrolet Chevelle, while his opponent was in a 1978 Chevrolet El Camino. During the race, the victim lost control and hit a tree.
According to Richmond County Police, the other driver, a 26-year-old man, was found responsible for racing, as well as failing to keep within the lanes. He is now in jail and is being charged with many crimes including vehicular homicide, drag racing, reckless driving and wrong-way driving on February 24, 2014.
According to a police report, the victim was then taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center Emergency Room in a private vehicle by an unknown person. Tragically, he died from his injuries in the hospital and was officially pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m. the next night.
The man being charged for the crimes mentioned above pled not guilty on Tuesday, July 3rd of 2014.
