In Atlanta, a drunk driver caused a series of collisions and sent a police officer running for his life.
The Atlanta Police Department said that the incident happened just before dawn on Sunday, July 24.
Atlanta Police Department officer McCall was assisting another officer at the scene of an accident. They were located in the southbound lanes of GA 400, just past the Lenox Road exit. McCall was utilizing his vehicle with the lights flashing to block traffic until a HERO unit could arrive to assist.
Officer McCall was returning to his vehicle when a blue Audi that was traveling at high speeds in the far left lane collided with a Ford. The Ford lost control as a result of the collision and crossed two lanes of traffic. The Ford then struck Officer McCall’s patrol vehicle.
According to a spokesperson for the APD, Officer McCall was able to run towards the shoulder and avoided being struck.
Police allege that the driver of the Audi, who was identified as Abraham Martinez, was intoxicated. He was not injured in the crash. He was booked into the Atlanta jail. The driver of the Ford was unconscious for a time but came to before being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.
