Amazon has become a leader in e-commerce, offering same-day shipping in several locations. An Amazon Prime account offers a member free two-day shipping, something that Amazon pushes its contracted drivers to fulfill by working grueling hours. Unfortunately, sometimes these high expectations end in tragedy. Getting your package in as little as twenty-four hours has come at a price that has remained hidden from the public. In 2019, there were at least 60 accidents involving Amazon delivery contractors since 2015. Those accidents all resulted in serious injuries and 10 deaths. Amazon works hard to distance itself from the responsibility of the deaths despite maintaining a tight grip on how its contracted drivers perform their jobs.
CBS 46 reports that an Amazon van plowed into a home, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.
Newton County homeowner Trevor McKinley noticed that some stones were falling off of his garage. He initially thought that his home, which was just a year old, was falling apart.
McKinley was going over surveillance camera footage when he caught an Amazon driver plow into his garage. The driver then left without notifying him of the accident.
The surveillance video shows the driver pulling into the driveway, partially onto the grass. He then approaches the porch and throws the package before realizing that his van was moving forward. The van plows into the garage, and the driver is seen rushing towards the vehicle.
The driver left the scene without any notification to the homeowner. The accident caused exterior damage but also structural damage to the garage. An entire wall will need to be replaced.
A contractor quoted McKinley a repair cost between $10,000 – $15,000.
When he contacted Amazon regarding his experience, he was offered a $75 gift card.
