Tragedy struck the community of Athens, Georgia when a motorist and a trio of bicyclists collided. The crash claimed the life of one of the bicyclists and injured another.
Whitney Baker Howard was arrested after the collision, allegedly for being under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
Howard was driving westbound on Athena Drive near the intersection of Anderson Lane. She crossed the center lane and struck the three cyclists, who were traveling eastbound.
The cyclists were identified as Ashely Block, Mitchell Eric Enfinger and Brian Molloy.
Block was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed that she was struck by Howard’s vehicle head-on. Enfinger was seriously injured after the collision on his left side ejected him to the shoulder of the roadway. Molloy was struck by the side mirror and suffered only injuries to his arm.
Howard was arrested. She is facing numerous charges including first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs, DUI endangerment, and distracted driving.
Howard had a child of toddler age in the backseat at the time of the accident.
According to documents obtained from municipal sources, Howard has an additional DUI charge that is pending from June.
Molloy is the owner of Hub Bicycles. Flowers were left by fellow cyclists outside the store as a show of support.
