Accidents involving fatalities are often tragic and can impact entire communities. However, some accidents have an even larger impact than others. When fatalities span generations of a single family, the tragedy is compounded.
Police responded to a call about an accident on Highway 25, just south of Millen, Georgia at about 8:55 pm on January 28th. The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 25 and Gays Hill Church Road. At the time of the accident, both southbound lanes of Highway 25 were shut down.
The two-car accident claimed the lives of 3 people, spanning 4 generations. Cortney Hill, 23, and her daughter, Paisleigh Hill, 6 months, along with Lois Burke, 66, all tragically lost their lives as a result of the accident. Burke was grandmother to Paisleigh. Also injured in the accident were 66-year-old Otis Burke and another young child.
Brittany Schultz, granddaughter of Lois and Otis Burke rushed to the scene of the accident. Her daughter, Aleigha, was pulled from the car with only a few scratches and bruises. Her brother, the husband of Cortney and father to Paisleigh, is a Marine. He was stationed away from the family and was notified of the accident and said to be on his way home as of the 29th.
The driver of the pickup truck that struck the car the family was riding in was treated and released at the scene with only minor injuries.
Otis Burke was initially listed in critical condition at the hospital. According to family members, they were called to the hospital to make a family decision regarding his care. On February 8th, nearly two weeks after the accident, Otis Burke’s condition was listed as “good” at Memorial Medical in Savannah, Georgia.
Georgia State Patrol’s accident reconstruction team was on the scene of the accident on February 1st. They were attempting to reconstruct the crash. It is still under investigation.
