An Army soldier faced a court-martial due to a rollover crash in Georgia after a June 2019 training accident at the U.S. Military Academy. Macon.com reported on the verdict and sentencing.
The soldier was driving a military vehicle at the academy and rolled it over outside of the main gates. One soldier was killed in the crash and two others were injured. It is unclear what exactly caused the soldier to lose control of the vehicle to that degree.
Regardless of the cause, military officials found the soldier guilty of negligent homicide and the prevention of authorized seizure of property. Charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless operation of a vehicle, and two charges of dereliction of duty were dropped
The military reduced her rank from staff sergeant to private. She also received a sentence of three years of confinement, after which she will be discharged for improper behavior.
Even though the details surrounding the accident have not been revealed to the public, the military clearly believed that her actions caused the death of her fellow cadet. Military accidents are judged under different rules, but we hope that there is a mechanism for the families of the injured and killed to receive the justice and compensation from the government that they deserve.
