Large truck crashes are on the rise according to a report from the NHTSA. While overall highway fatality numbers decreased in 2017, the number of crashes involving large trucks increased. In 2017, there were 841 occupants of large trucks and 3,450 occupants of passenger vehicles killed in crashes involving large trucks. This represents an increase compared to numbers from 2016.
The report Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration stated that there were 4,654 fatalities in large truck and bus crashes. 2017 was the eighth year in a row to see an increase since an all-time low that occurred in 2009.
The AJC reports that a man has died following a head-on crash with a dump truck in Troup County.
The crash occurred on Monday, June 1st just before 12:20 p.m. on Ga. 109 near Mountville and the Troup-Meriwether County Line.
A 52-year-old male was fatally injured in the crash.
He was driving a Chevrolet Silverado westbound when he crossed the center line. He traveled into the path of eastbound traffic, striking a Mack Truck head-on.
The driver of the truck, a 68-year-old Thomaston man said that he tried to brake and swerve to avoid the accident. He was injured and taken to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Hospital.
The crash is still under investigation, and charges have not been placed against the driver yet.
