The phrase “catastrophic collision” often brings images of accidents involving large trucks to mind. When debris falls from a truck, it can cause an accident that leads to serious injury and in some cases, death. Improper securement is the number one reason that debris may fall from trucks. 13 WMAZ reports that a truck struck a bridge and caused debris from the bridge to fall on another vehicle.
The accident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Friday on the ramp to Interstate 75 North from the eastbound lanes of Hartley Bridge Road.
According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department, a tractor-trailer was hauling a large piece of equipment. The truck’s driver was attempting to get on I-75 when a part of the equipment struck the bridge it was traveling under. The bridge was damaged in the collision.
A car was traveling behind the tractor-trailer, and the debris from the bridge that the tractor-trailer struck landed on the car. The driver of the car, identified as a 55-year old woman, was injured from the debris. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries. Fortunately, she is expected to recover
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured. He was issued a citation.
