Compared to all other types of accidents, head-on collisions are rare. They occur most often in rural areas, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This type of crash causes 13% of all fatalities in rural areas, compared with 7% in urban areas. Distracted driving is one of the major causes behind head-on collisions. Another reason behind this type of collision is drowsy driving as well as not adjusting driving behavior for traffic or weather conditions. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is also a prime factor in this type of crash.
