11 Alive reported on a massive multi-vehicle accident on the perimeter Sunday evening involving 19 vehicles and snarling traffic badly on the busy highway for hours.
According to Dunwoody Police, the 19-car pileup accident happened near the North Peachtree Road exit, a busy stretch sandwiched between the Perimeter Mall area and the busy Buford Highway / Peachtree Industrial Boulevard / Spaghetti Junction exits. The accident caused traffic to back up in westbound lanes all the way to Spaghetti Junction and blocked all freeway entrances all the way back to Chamblee-Dunwoody Road.
Motorists were urged to find alternate routes or expect significant delays; traffic was diverted by responding officers onto N Peachtree Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard for several hours as all westbound lanes were blocked. They were able to reopen four of the lanes by around 7:30 p.m.
While Georgia State Police units and Dunwoody Police Department collaborated to handle the crash and its aftermath, Dunwoody Police is taking the lead on handling the investigation, according to spokespeople from the Georgia State Patrol.
