Certain roadways may be prone to accidents. This could be due to the amount of traffic or other conditions that exist making the roadway dangerous. Interstate 16 in Georgia has seen its share of fatal accidents, one of them making national news. Now there is another tragic accident to add to the toll.
The Georgia State Patrol are investigating the third fatal accident on this stretch of roadway in just over a year. A Wednesday morning crash left 5 people dead on I-16 near exit 155 and Pooler Parkway. The accident occurred just after 5:45 a.m. The two vehicles, one a Mustang carrying three people, and the other, a Kia Soul, carrying two people, crashed when the Mustang crossed the median and hit the Soul head on.
The driver of the Mustang was ejected from the car and all five victims were killed pretty much instantly.
Speed may have been a factor in the accident. The posted speed limit in the area is 70 m.p.h., but the vehicles were so mangled that first responders had to cut most of the victims from the vehicles. A GSP spokesman stated that since I-16 is a straight road with few curves, speed and distracted driving are often factors in accidents that occur there.
This wreck comes just 14 months after the tragic accident that claimed the lives of five Georgia Southern nursing students were killed and a sixth seriously injured in an accident with a tractor trailer. A month after that accident, another five people were killed in a similar accident along I-16 in Pooler.
All three accidents occurred in the Pooler area of I-16. There are plans to widen the roadway to help to alleviate traffic issues coming in and out of Savannah.
