There is excellent news for people who have had complications from Depuy hip implants from earlier this month. Johnson & Johnson and Depuy have been slapped with a huge fine, a billion dollar one, and ordered to pay it. The two companies are appealing but it’s another bellwether case that shows just how much these implants are causing problems for recipients.
On top of the $1 billion punitive damages award, $30 million in actual damages were also awarded. The metal-on-metal implants cause significant medical complications and often require a second surgery to repair bone erosion and tissue damage upon failure. Hip replacement surgery is an expensive process requiring long periods of recovery time and painful physical therapy.
This is the third bellwether trial for Johnson & Johnson over this issue. The first one went in favor of the two companies, but these latest two have gone in favor of the plaintiffs. A fourth trial is expected to be completed in September 2017.

Together, we can continue to press the fight. These devices should have gotten much more testing to avoid these painful and expensive complications.
