A shocking story of death and theft has been unfolding over the past few days, and some people think there may be more to it than it first appears. Here’s what we know from the media.
On Tuesday, a 13-year-old boy was riding a dirt bike on the street doing wheelies. Police say he ran a red light and a box truck clipped the rear wheel. The boy sustained serious injuries and later died at the hospital. This much is clear. But witnesses to the crash saw something else happen.
Someone near the crash stole the dirt bike while the teen was injured on the street and drove off. One witness tried to follow him, taking photos along the way. The thief turned down Confederate Avenue and was gone. The photos were turned over to the police for their investigation.
The family and local community are still trying to cope. Some people, including the boy’s mother, say that the boy might have been targeted for the bike. There is no evidence of that as of yet. Police do say that the boy was too young to be riding a dirt bike on public roads and that the bike may not have been street legal.
Regardless, if the bike is found, whoever took it will be facing charges and some serious questions.
