Tractor trailers are a fact of travel on highways and interstates. These big-rig trucks can be intimidating. When they become involved in accidents, the results can be disastrous and snarl traffic for hours.
Last weekend, an accident involving two tractortrailers shut down Interstate 20 past Liberty Road in Villa Rica for two hours. On Friday, June 10 at about 6:15 a.m., one tractor-trailer collided with the back of another. Afterwards, the tractor-trailer ran into the woods. I-20 was littered with debris.
45-year-old David L. Furgerson, Jr., was driving a Mack tractor trailer, ran into the back of a Fed-Ex truck pulling double trailers. Furgerson was following the Fed-Ex truck too closely at the time of the accident.
58-year old Jerome Perkins, the driver of the Fed-Ex truck, was able to maintain control of his vehicles. He slowed to a stop in the right-hand lane of I-20.
The accident caused the rear axle of the Fed-Ex truck to break into two pieces. Debris and packages were scattered across the interstate as a result.
Furgerson was injured in the accident and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Perkins was also injured and was taken to Tanner Medical Center.
Charges against Furgerson are pending.
