The FDA has not enforced any type of recall on the creams, especially since the manufacturers made the decision on their own to pull the products. However, the Food and Drug Administration has released a warning that some types of denture cream do include zinc, and if the creams are used in excess, they can lead to the zinc toxicity problems. The types of denture creams that were pulled from the market include Fixodent, Super Poligrip and Poligrip, all released by either Proctor and Gamble or GlaxoSmithKline.
Symptoms of zinc poisoning include the following: loss of balance, anemia, weakness, fainting, numbness in extremities, copper deficiency, difficulty walking, and confusion. In some cases, the toxicity can lead to paralysis that cannot be reversed.
Although the manufacturers did remove the product from the market, there were still numerous patients who have suffered from these side effects. Because of this, thousands of lawsuits are currently in litigation. While no settlements have been made, there is a good chance that the settlement will take place in the coming year. At this time, it is hard to tell how much these settlements will be for, but most likely, they will cover any and all medical expenses that patients will face after suffering from the zinc poisoning.
