Cold therapy, also known as cryotherapy, is used to treat muscle inflammation and damage to limbs and joints. However, many of the cryotherapy devices have caused severe side effects, prompting the FDA to issue a recall and prompting numerous civil lawsuits.
Cold Therapy
For many years, cold therapy has been used to reduce inflammation and swelling of the muscles. Just think of how many times you have applied an ice pack to a twisted ankle or to a sore wrist. It is the most common way to treat these problems dating back to the 1800s. However, with the creation of cryotherapy treatment devices such as those designed by BREG Polar Care Products, a new problem has come along. The manufacturers of the products have indicated that the cold therapy needs to be used for as long as possible for the best results. Because of this, numerous temporary and permanent side effects have come about.
Cryotherapy devices work by providing a constant supply of ice cold water to the injured area. Devices used by doctors have been distributed by three major companies: BREG Polar Care Products, EBIce, and DonJoy. These devices are very different from an ice park you may put on a sprained ankle at home. In fact, the side effects from the use of the devices have been so severe as to require limb amputation.
Patients who have been prescribed the device have had such side effects as permanent nerve damage to the area, loss of circulation to the area, frost bite and limb death which leads to amputation. Because these side effects are directly attributed to the devices used in cryotherapy, the FDA has issued a serious warning and recall. In fact, in 2008, the FDA recalled the cold therapy devices manufactured by BREG Polar Care Products. Other cryotherapy devices have not been recalled, but they carry an FDA warning of the severe side effects that could come from their use.
There have been thousands of lawsuits against the makers of these cold therapy devices since April of 2004, and the compensation has depended on the severity of damage. For those suffering from permanent nerve damage or loss of limb, compensation has been in the millions. It is important to note that the severe side effects that come from using these devices is directly linked to how long the device was used on one particular area of the body for an extended amount of time.
If you had a doctor use cryotherapy on you and now you have suffered from side effects due to it, then you have a lawsuit against the makers of the device. Contact John Foy, at (404) 879-7518 as soon as possible so that he can help you determine how much compensation you deserve.
